Last year was a proactive one for RCP, to say the least. New developments across the City of Huntsville made headlines as announcements for our flourishing community continued. As our team prepares to fulfill more promises within each of our separate developments, we reflect on the achievements that closed out 2017 as a successful year in the books and how we’re propelling forward in 2018.
Have you noticed the new big sign in front of Downtown Huntsville’s newest development? In January, RCP broke ground introducing City Centre at Big Spring, the Upscale in Downtown development on the corner of Monroe Street and Williams Avenue. As of the end of 2017, Phase One has four of the six floors of Alabama’s first AC Hotels by Marriott built. The hotel will include 150-units in the six-story building, with work out amenities, bar, and a European design. Phase One is expected to be complete by late 2018. We look forward to fresh retail and residential options for Phase Two, including exciting discussions such as a rooftop bar overlooking Big Spring Park and a market epicenter with creative food concepts and vendors.

We have loved the community’s engagement with the Whole Foods-anchored Shops at Merchants Walk. Last year, we were pleased to introduce its sister-property: The Shops at Merchants Square. The development broke ground in June with the announcements of multiple new to Alabama or Huntsville concepts. Ulta will anchor the property with Chuy’s Tex Mex, Char Steakhouse, Brass Tap Craft Beer Bar, and J. Whitener Boutique as the first tenants to open later this year.

It’s hard to believe it has been two years since we welcomed Huntsville to explore the Whole Foods-anchored Shops at Merchants Walk. After introducing first-to-Huntsville concepts like Lululemon Athletica, Farm Burger, Maki Fresh, and Orangetheory Fitness, RCP welcomed two new tenants last year. In June, the city expanded its innovation with Google Fiberchoosing their new home in Huntsville at Merchants Walk. Additionally, we added Hollywood Feed to our dynamic family-friendly mix of tenants. We are pleased to introduce more new services to the area with Salons by JC and Noire Nail Bar set to open this year.

In February of 2017, demolition of Madison Square Mall began to make way for MidCity Huntsville, a $350 million mixed-use development at University Drive (U.S. 72) and Research Park Boulevard. Ranked among the 12 Largest Commerical Real Estate Developments in the Nation, the 100 acres of land is in its first phase of creating a work, live, and play destination to enliven the middle of the city. MidCity made a debut on Huntsville’s Top 20 Stories of 2017 for “capping the year of commercial growth” and bringing over 350 jobs to the area with the Grand Opening of Topgolf in December. In 2018, we are looking forward to welcoming Highpoint Climbing, beginning the infrastructure on an 8,500 seat amphitheater, and introducing more new and exciting retail and restaurant concepts.
