Announcements, groundbreakings, charrettes, and events packed the third quarter of 2018 at the RCP office. Here’s a look back at what’s happened with our properties and developments since July. We are honored to have you as a part of the community empowerment process.
Last quarter brought the addition of more nationally acclaimed businesses to the MidCity lineup, including Wahlburgers, Rascal Flatts Restaurant, and Marriott’s Aloft Hotel.
In September, RCP Companies announced REI Co-op opening its first location in the state of Alabama at MidCity Huntsville. REI is a member-owned co-op, offering top quality gear, expertise and experiences to connect people to a life outdoors. With more than 11,000 active REI members in the state of Alabama, REI Huntsville will have direct access to MidCity Park, a 40-acre public park with a trail system, lakeside dock, and an outdoor amphitheater.
In addition to REI Co-op’s announcement, RCP also introduced another new restaurant – Pies & Pints will be opening their first Huntsville location at MidCity. The 4,250 sq ft specialty pizza and craft beer restaurant is scheduled to open summer 2019 on a staggered schedule with the first phase of retail at MidCity Huntsville which is currently under construction.
If you’ve driven by the site recently you may have noticed that construction is moving right along. This past quarter, High Point Climbing & Fitness held a groundbreaking for their 25,000 sq ft facility and the building has gone vertical since then! You can look forward to the award-winning climbing gym to open their Huntsville location next year as well.
At the beginning of July, MidCity began a campaign on Facebook for Trader Joe’s to procure a location in Huntsville. We received word from their real estate team that Trader Joe’s is big on COMMUNITY DEMAND to procure new locations.
We had an outstanding initial push with the post calling the community to fill Trader Joe’s location request form. We reached over 81,000 people, 750 shares, and 570 likes. Our incredible local media picked it up the next day too – all organically – with local viewership reaching more than 160,000.
Dan Bane, CEO of the independent grocer, stated in the “Inside Trader Joe’s ” podcast that they are “..targeting to open 30 to 35 stores a year in the 48 states.” On July 19, RCP released an Open Letter to Dan Bane and the Trader Joe’s Crew to give them a glimpse at how great Huntsville is, how much they are wanted here, and how we have the perfect home for them at MidCity.

Sitting at the doors of MidCity, The Camp is preparing to open as a fully operating multi-concept restaurant, bar, and entertainment destination for the weekend warrior. The Camp’s purpose is to set the ethos of what to expect at MidCity – an approachable outdoor recreation destination where you can unwind, explore new sounds, enjoy art, and indulge in life’s pleasures. RCP has partnered with Atlanta’s Chef Marc Taft to activate a full bar and multiple restaurant and dessert concepts to be served out of the vintage airstream, retired firetruck, and Rosie the trailer.
In August, Alchemy Coffee opened their second location at The Camp within a two-story shipping container coffee shop, with rooftop lounge seating. Their new location is already booming and in return, they have expanded their hours twice to meet the demand. Alchemy at The Camp is now open 7 days a week, Mon.-Fri. 6:30a-7p, Sat. 9a-7p, and Sun. 9a-3p.
We have hosted several events at The Camp to engage with the community and spark interest as we prepare to open. Come explore The Camp during the multiple events coming up including:
